Day 30: Grouse Mountain(그라우스 마운틴) 등산하기!

 호스텔에서 기상하고 오늘은 뭐할까 고민하다가 그라우스 마운틴(Grouse Mountain)은 꼭 가봐야 한다고 해서 그냥 갔다. 이런 자연 관광지는 북 밴쿠버(North Vancouver)에 위치하고 있다. 밴쿠버 다운타운(Vancouver Downtown)에서 조금 멀지만 북 밴쿠버(North Vancouver)는 정말 추천이다. 하버 센터(Harbour Centre)보다 이곳에 오는 것을 추천한다. 가능하면 Victoria Island(빅토리아 아일랜드)랑 Whistler(휘슬러)도 가고 싶었지만 혼자 가기에는 애로사항이 많았다.

 그라우스 산(Grouse Mountain)에 와서 조금 헤맸다. 어디가 입구이고 어떻게 올라가야 하는 것인지 몰랐다.

 After arriving at Mount Grouse, I wandered a little.

 13km 밖에 안 떨어져 있지만 대중교통을 이용하면 꽤 오래 걸리는 긴 거리이다. 캐나다에는 Uber(우버)랑 Lyft(리프트)가 없기 때문에 대중교통을 이용했고 편도 버스 비용은 $2.5 이다. 한화로는 2,300원 정도. 한국 대주교통 요금의 두 배.

 그라우스 산(Grouse Mountain)에 대해서 자세히 조사를 하고 간 것이 아니기 때문에 린 캐년 파크(Lynn Canyon Park) 정도 생각하고 갔는데 완전 다른 장소였다. 사람들이 주차장에서 스키 장비(Ski Gears, Equipment)를 꺼내길래 스키장이라는 것을 도착한 이후에 알았다.

 I went to Lynn Canyon Park because I didn't go through the Growe Mountain in detail, but it was a completely different place. People took ski gear out of the parking lot and realised it after arriving.

 케이블 카(Cable Car)를 타고 바로 내려오기에는 시간이 많은 것 같아서 그냥 정상까지 등산하기로 결정했다. 

 I thought I had a lot of time to come straight down by cable car, so I just decided to climb to the top.

 주의: 길이 엄청 위험하고 정상까지 3시간 정도 걸리니 등산 마니아가 아니라면 추천하지 않습니다. 올라가는 길에 포기하는 사람들도 많이 봤습니다. 내려오는 길이 더 어렵고 위험하기 때문에 건강에 문제가 있는 사람은 애초에 시도도 하지마세요.

 CAUTION: Since the road is extremely dangerous and takes about three hours to the top, I don't recommend it unless you're a mountain climber. Don't even try in the first place if you have health problems because the way down is more difficult and dangerous.

 나는 1시간 정도 올라가고 너무 힘들었지만 가는 길에 말벗이 되는 사람을 만나서 정말 다행이었다. 저 빨간 옷을 입은 친구(Abi)가 자기만 잘 따라오라고 해서 걱정 없이 정상까지 잘 등산했다.

 I went up about an hour and it was so hard, but I was really lucky to meet someone who was left speechless on the way. That red-clad friend (Abi) told me to keep up with him, so I climbed to the top without worrying.

 겨울에는 이렇게 바닥이 완전히 얼어있기 때문에 절대 절대 추천하지 않습니다. 정말로 죽을 수도 있습니다.

 I never recommend it in winter because the floor is completely frozen like this. You could really die.

 이 기회를 통해서 아비(Abi)에게 감사함을 전합니다. 저 친구 없었으면 등산 중에 미아가 되었을텐데.

 I take this opportunity to thank Abi. Without him, I would have become a lost child while climbing.

 이 사진은 거의 다 올라왔을 때 기뻐서 사진을 찍었습니다. 자연이 너무 아름다운 것 같아요.

 This picture was taken with joy when it was almost done. I think nature is so beautiful.

 3시간 동안 한 번도 안 쉬고 이렇게 등산을 할 수 있다는 사실에 나 스스로에게 놀랐습니다.

 I was surprised to realize that I could climb this mountain without taking a break.

 정상에 도착하면 식당도 있고 휴식을 취할 수 있는 휴게소 같은 곳이 있습니다.

 When you get to the top, there are restaurants and rest areas where you can relax.

 이 밴쿠버 동계올림픽 성화를 보니까 바로 김연아 선수가 떠올랐습니다. 캐나다 홈 게임이니까 캐나다가 물론 압도적으로 잘 하기도 했지만 김연아 선수를 떠올리지 않을 수 없었습니다.

 When I saw the torch at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, I immediately remembered Kim Yuna. Since it's a home game in Canada, Canada did overwhelmingly well, but I couldn't help but think of Kim Yu-na.  

 어린이들이 썰매타는 공간입니다. 눈은 자연설이 아니고 인공설이었습니다. It's a place where children ride sleds. Snow was not a natural snow, it was an artificial snow.

 몸을 녹일 수 있는 불도 있습니다. 확실히 어린 학생들이 많이 보이네요. 스키를 타고 싶었지만 렌탈비가 너무 비싸서 포기했습니다. 만약 한국에서 그라우스 산(Grouse Mountain)이랑 장비 대여를 신청하고 왔더라면 경제적으로 대여할 수 있었을텐데 아쉬웠습니다. 준비의 중요성을 다시 깨우쳤습니다.

 There is also a fire that can melt your body. I'm sure you can see a lot of young students. I wanted to ski, but I gave up because the rental fee was too expensive. If I had applied for cable car ticket of Grow Mountain and ski equipment from Korea, I would have been able to rent it economically. I have re-learned the importance of preparation.

 지도가 있지만 스키가 없어서 딱히 의미가 없었습니다.

I had a map, but I didn't have any skiing equipment, so it didn't mean much.

 아름답다. It's beautiful.

 제가 밴쿠버 올림픽 스타 플레이어들이 경기를 했던 곳에 왔다는 사실만으로 너무 기뻤습니다.

 I was so happy just because I came to the place where the Vancouver Olympic star players played.

 식당에서 무엇을 먹으려고 했지만 정말 말도 안되게 비쌉니다. 간식 같은 것을 사가기를 추천합니다. 등산할 때는 몰랐는데 모든 사람들이 식당에 있었습니다.

 I tried to eat something at a restaurant, but it's really expensive. I recommend you to bring snacks. I didn't know when I was climbing, but everyone was at the restaurant.

 I think the person in the picture must had a cold. No doubt.

 $15은 한화로 약 13,500원. 케이블 카 10분 가까이 타는데 13,500원. 정말 비쌉니다. 그런데 13,500원과 나의 목숨을 바꾸고 싶지는 않았기 때문에 무조건 케이블 카 탑승했습니다. 만약 한국에서 예매를 했으면 훨씬 저렴하게 표를 구매할 수 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다.

 Fifteen dollars is about 13,500 won in Korea Won. I rode a cable car for almost 10 minutes. It's really expensive. But I did not want to change my life for 13,500 won, so I took a cable car. If you made a reservation before coming, you can buy tickets much cheaper.

결론(Conclusion):

 1. 자연은 아름답다.

 2. 그라우스 산(Grouse Mountain) 정상까지 등산하는 데에 3시간 정도 걸린다.

 3. 케이블 카는 비싸지만 목숨보다는 저렴하다.

 4. 스키 장비를 저렴한 곳에서 대여를 하면 된다.

 5. 그라우스 마운틴 식당은 미친듯이 비싸다.

CONCLUSION:
1. Nature is beautiful.
2. It takes about three hours to climb to the top of Mt. Grouse.
3. Cable cars are expensive but cheaper than one's life.
4. You can rent ski equipment at a cheap place.

Day 29: Lynn Canyon Park(린 캐니언 파크) 산책하기!

 린 캐니언 파크(Lynn Canyon Park)는 카필라노 서스펜션 파크(Capilano Suspension Park)의 대체재로 유명하다. 린 캐니언 파크는 무료이고 카필라노 서스펜션 파크는 유료이다. 필자가 확실하게 전해줄 수 있는 사실은 두 곳 모두 산책하기 너무 좋고 맑은 공기를 마시기 너무나도 좋은 장소이다.

 Lynn Canyon Park is known as a replacement for Capilano Suspension Park. Lynn Canyon Park is free and Capilano Suspension Park is charged. The fact that I can tell you for sure is that both places are so good to take a walk and so good to breathe in fresh air.

 Gate closed at 6PM

 Park Closed to the Public (6pm ~ 7am). 주차장은 오후6시 부터 익일 오전 7시까지 닫힌다. 즉 무슨 말이냐면 오전 7시부터 오후 6시까지 열려 있다.

 Black Bear Sighting
Do not approach or interfere with bears. (곰에게 접근하거나 간섭하지 마십시오.)

Make noise in your yard and on the trail. (너의 마당과 오솔길에서 소음을 내라.)

Remove all bear attractants. (모든 곰 유인제를 제거하라.)

Leave bears an escape route. (곰을 탈출구로 남겨두어라.)

Keep an eye on children and pets. (어린이와 애완동물을 계속 주시하라.)

Dogs should be on leash. (개는 목줄을 매야 한다.)

 안전 사항에 대한 사인들이 매우 많다. 이유는 무료이기 때문에 security도 없고 누가 다쳐도 책임질 사람이 없기 때문이다. 관광객 본인이 안전하게 잘 해야한다.

 There are many signs for tourist's safety. The reason is that there is no security because it is free and no one is responsible for anyone who gets hurt.

 야생 곤충, 야생 동물에 대한 작은 박물관이다. 아주 작은 박물관이다. 카필라노 서스펜션 파크(Capilano Suspension Park)에 갔을 때는 한국 관광객들이 많이 없었는데 이 곳에는 한국 관광객들이 많이 있었다.

 It is a very small museum.

 굉장히 크다! 다 둘러보려면 4시간 보다 더 걸릴 수도 있다.

 Very big! It may take more than 4 hours to look around.

 Lynn Canyon Park Historical Perspective

 필자는 개인적으로 밴쿠버 다운타운(Vancouver Downtown) 혹은 한아름 마트(H-Mart)에 가는 것 보다 이 곳에서 맑은 공기를 마시는 것이 훨씬 좋았다. 이런 맑은 공기를 어디에서 다시 마셔 볼 수 있을까. 캐나다 사람은 정말 축복 받은 사람들이다.

 Personally, it was much better for me to breathe fresh air here than to go to Vancouver Downtown or H-Mart. Where can I try this fresh air again? Canadians are really blessed people.

 한국에는 이런 공원이 시골에 가야 있다. 그런데 시골은 접근하기가 어렵고..

 눈이 온 다음 날에 방문해서 길이 굉장히 위험했다. 꼭 장갑과 튼튼한 등산화를 신고 가자. 여름에 방문하면 어떨지 모르지만 길 자체가 안전하지 않다. 넘어지면 큰 부상 위험이 있다.

 The road was very dangerous because I visited after it snowed. Let's make sure to wear gloves and strong climbing shoes. I don't know if you visit in the summer, but the road itself is not safe. There is a great risk of injury if you fall.

 린 캐년 공원(Lynn Canyon Park)에 방문했으면 반드시 봐야 할 것이다. Twin Falls(트윈 폴스)!

 미국과 캐나다에서 처음 본 인용문이 적힌 벤치. 벤치에 꼭 이런 인용문이 있었는데 미국과 캐나다에는 대단한 사람들이 얼마나 많은 것인가?

 가족 단위로 온 관광객. 이렇게 평일 오전에 가족 다 같이 국내로 여행을 다닌다는 것은 정말 부러웠다. 그리고 국내에 가족끼리 여행 할 만한 장소가 있다는 것도 축복이다.

 It's a family-based tourist. It's also a blessing that there are places in the country where families can travel together.

Skid Row(스키드 로우) in Vancouver, Canada(밴쿠버)?

 미국 LA 부근에 Skid Row(스키드 로우)라는 지역이 있다. 이 지역은 노숙자들이 모여 사는 지역이다. LA는 미국 전체(전미)에서 가장 큰 도시 중 하나이고 가장 부유한 지역 중 하나이다. 그런데 전미에서 가장 많은 노숙자들이 사는 곳이기도 하다.

 캐나다는 복지와 국민들의 생활 만족도로 유명한 나라이다. 그런데 이런 복지가 좋고 생활 만족도가 높은 캐나다에도 노숙자가 존재한다. 그것도 많이.

 이렇게 밴쿠버 다운타운(Vancouver Downtown)과 차이나타운으로 가는 길로 걸어간다.

 If you search 'Homeless Service' on Google, there are seventeen homeless service places in Vancouver. Vancouver is such a small city, its population is only 670,000.

 구글에서 '홈리스 서비스'를 검색하면 밴쿠버에는 노숙자 서비스 장소가 17곳이나 된다. 밴쿠버는 매우 작은 도시이고, 인구는 67만 명에 불과하다.

 You might think it's a trash dump but this is a place where homeless people live. When I saw it I couldn't believe it. The homeless people live here regardless of the weather.

 쓰레기장이라고 생각할지 모르지만 이곳은 노숙자들이 사는 곳이다. 그것을 보았을 때 나는 믿을 수가 없었다. 노숙자들은 날씨와 상관없이 이곳에 산다.

 Many homeless people live on the street. Even in this cold weather.

 많은 노숙자들이 거리에 산다. 이렇게 추운 날씨에도.

 교회 봉사 단체에서 노숙자분들을 위해서 무료 급식 나눔을 하고 있었다.

 The church service was sharing free meals for the homeless.

 서울역 앞에서도 교회 봉사 단체가 서울역 노숙자분들을 위해서 무료 식사를 제공한다. 이 모습을 보면서 나는 깊은 생각에 잠기게 되었다.

Day 28: Vancouver Downtown(밴쿠버 다운타운) 둘러보기!

(feat. Gastown(가스타운), Yaletown(예일타운), Canada Place(캐나다 플레이스), Vancouver Community College(밴쿠버 커뮤니티 칼리지), Vancouver Public Library(밴쿠버 도서관) )

 가스타운 증기 시계(The Gastown Steam Clock) @12p.m. 일부러 맞춰서 갔는데 조금 늦었다. 그리고 웬걸 사람들이 많이 없었다. 유명한 관광지라고 해서 사람들이 많이 모일 줄 알았는데 말이다.

 증기 시계니까 정각이 되면 증기로 위로 뿜어져 나온다. 그냥 그런가 보다 하고 패스!

 It's a steam clock, so when it's on time, it shoots up into the air.

 BC Liquor Store(BC 리커 스토어) 저 곳에서 사람들이 술을 많이 산다. People buy a lot of alcohol there.

 캐나다 플레이스(Canada Place)에서 본 바다?! 그런데 눈이 내려서 아무 것도 안 보인다.

 The sea I saw at Canada Place?! But I couldn't see anything because it snoed.

 This Plaza Recognizes Jack Poole: a Great Canadian, a Great Westerner, a great man.

 누군지 전혀 모르겠다. 다시 읽으면 기억이 날텐데 작은 글씨여서 보이지도 않는다.. 올림픽에 관련돼서 대단한 캐나다 사람이라는 것만 기억난다. 그렇다. 대단한 사람이다.

 Lego Dorphin! 레고 돌고래!

 저 레고 돌고래(Lego Dorphin)은 이 사람이 만들었다. Douglas Coupland(더글라스 쿱랜드)

 The most famous subway station in Vancouver, Canada?

 아마도 밴쿠버에서 가장 유명한 지하철 역? 왜냐하면 공항에서 바로 이어지는 열차가 오고 간다.

 뉴욕(New York)과 서울(Seoul)에는 시에서 운영하는 공공 자전거(Public Bike) 시스템이 있는데 밴쿠버(Vancouver)는 비교적 작은 도시여서 없나 보다. 일일이 자전거를 빌려야 하다니 불편하다.

 New York and Seoul have a city-run Public Bike system, but Vancouver is a relatively small city, so it must not be. It's inconvenient to have to rent a bicycle every day.

 돌아가는 길에 다시 증기시계를 봤다. 오후 한 시였다. 오후 12시에 비해 사람들이 더 있었다. 그런데 어떤 눈치 없는 저 중국인 때문에 사람들이 엄청 짜증냈다. 증기 시계에서 증기가 끝날 때 까지 다른 사람들은 사진도 못 찍고 저기서 계속 저러고 있었다. 중국인에게는 무슨 일이 있었을까?

 I saw the steam clock again on the way back. It was one o'clock in the afternoon. There were more people than at 12 p.m. But people were really annoyed by the Chinese standing before the clock. Until the steam clock was over, other people couldn't take a picture because the Chinese person kept doing that there as if the clock is her's. What happened to the Chinese?

 그 중국인이 가고 나서는 다른 중국인이 새치기를 해버렸다. 중국인은 왜 저럴까?

 After the Chinese person had gone, another Chinese cut the line and took a picture. What's wrong with the Chinese?

 위 사진 속에서 그 중국인들을 아직도 볼 수 있다. 사진만 거의 10분 째.. 다른 사람들이 영어로 나오라고 해도 이해를 못하니 의사소통이 될리가 없다. 결국에는 서양 사람들이 몸짓하면서 나오라고 해서 저렇게 셀카를 찍고 있다. 중국인 관광객들에게는 교육이 필요하다.

 You can still see the Chinese in the picture above. She's been taking pictures for almost 10 minutes even if other people ask her to go out in English. People can't communicate because she didn't understand.  Chinese tourists need education.

 캐나다 대학교는 어떨까 하고 방문했다. 입학하려면 어떻게 해야 하냐고 물어보고 학생들은 대부분 어디서 오는지 물어봤더니 입학은 인터넷에서 알아서 찾아보라고 했고, 대부분 캐나다 현지 사람이 아니고 외국인이 다닌다고 했다. 학비는 한 학기에 천 만원 가까이.... 부자만 다닐 수 있을 듯 하다. 커뮤니티 칼리지(Community College)는 한국의 전문대학교랑 비슷하다고 생각하면 된다.

 외국인 학생들이 영어 점수가 부족해고 SAT 점수가 없어도 입학할 수 있으니까 커뮤니티 칼리지(community college)를 선호한다고 들었다. 그리고 워킹 홀리데이(Working Holiday)하면서도 수업을 듣고 학위 취득이 가능해서 외국인 학생들이 많이 선호한다. 학위의 매력은 없다.

 I heard that foreign students prefer community college because even if they lack English scores  they can still enter without SAT scores. And foreign students prefer it because they can take classes and get a degree while doing working holiday. But there's no benefit of a degree.

  그래서 그냥 핸드폰 충전하고, 화장실 가고, 학교 학생들에게 이것 저것 물어봤다. 대부분 학생들이 커뮤니티 칼리지(community college)에서 졸업해서 직업을 구하고 영주권 취득을 하고 싶어 한다고 했다.

 So I just charged my cell phone, went to the bathroom, and asked school students this and that. Most of the students said they wanted to graduate from a community college to get a job and get permanent residency.

 예일타운(Yaletown)은 살짝 다운타운의 외곽이라고 할 수 있는데 술집, 레스토랑들이 많다.

 밴쿠버 도서관. 도서관이 이렇게 도심 속에 있는 것은 서울시도서관(Seoul Public Library)랑 비슷하다. 밴쿠버 도서관은 어떨까 하고 들어갔는데 확실히 쾌적한 것이 공부하기 좋은 환경이었다. 꼭 방문할 것을 추천한다.

 26 May 1995. 캐나다는 날짜를 적을 때 '일(day)' 부터 적는지 '달(month)'부터 적는지 알 수 없다. 가는 곳 마다 사람마다 모두 달랐다.

 1. 가스타운(Gastown)에서 중국인들을 조심하자.

 2. 밴쿠버 도서관(Vancouver Public Library)는 꼭 가야한다.

 3. 밴쿠버 커뮤니티 칼리지(Vancouver Community College) 2층 식당은 저렴하다.

 4. 예일타운(Yaletown)은 안 가도 좋다.

 밴쿠버 다운타운(Vancouver Downtown) 근처에서 머물고 있다면 카필라노 서스펜션 브릿지(Capilano Suspension Bridge)까지 가는 길이 쉽지는 않다. 대중교통을 이용하면 약 1시간 넘게 걸린다. www.capbridge.com 에서 셔틀버스(Shuttle Bus)을 알아 보면 다운타운에서 카필라노 파크까지 직행으로 가는 버스가 있다. 잘 찾아서 가면 무료 셔틀 버스가 있으니 잘 알아보자!

 북 밴쿠버(North Vancouver)에 위치하고 있어서 그런지 버스가 많지도 않다.

 입구를 통과하면 이렇게 지도가 나온다. 지도에서 어떤 어트랙션(attraction)을 먼저 체험할 지 정하고 이동하면 된다.

 알 수 없는 토템들이 입구에 있다! Unknown totem at the entrance!

 카필라노 서스펜션 브릿지~! 필자가 찍은 사진은 형편 없지만 정말 아름다운 곳이다. 

 다리를 지나가다 사진을 찍는 관광객들이 많다! 조금은 조심할 필요가 있다! 카메라를 떨어뜨리거나 몸을 친다면 굉장히 위험하니 조심히 지나가자.

 모든 어트랙션(Attraction)을 체험하는 데 거의 3 시간 정도 소요된다!

 밴쿠버 여행 와서 이 곳을 안 왔다면 후회했을 뻔 했다!

 지친 도심 여행을 하다가 이 곳에 오면 자동으로 운동도 되고 공기도 굉장히 맑아서 리프레시(refreshing) 된다. 관광지 중에 이 곳 보다 공기가 맑은 곳은 한 번도 못 봤다.

 2월인데 영하 날씨였다. 아마도 밴쿠버 다운타운(Vancouver Downtown)보다는 북 밴쿠버(North Vancouver)가 조금 추울 것이다.

 It was February, but it was below freezing. Perhaps North Vancouver is a bit colder than Vancouver Downtown.

 이런 설명도 있어서 어트랙션(attraction)을 체험하는 데에 이해가 안되는 걱정은 없다.

 사람들이 이 곳에서 사진 찍으려고 줄 서 있었다. 정말 아름답다!

 개인적으로 가장 무섭고 아찔했던 어트랙션이다. 무서운 사람들은 뒤 돌아가는 사람도 봤다.

 클리프워크(Cliffwalk)를 마치면 '2019' 조형물이 나온다. 공기가 너무 맑아서 좋았다. 인간의 행복에 기여하는 요소는 날씨가 큰 영향을 미친다고 생각한다.

 After the Cliffwalk, the sculpture "2019" will come out. The air was so clear that it was good. I think the weather has a great effect on human happiness.

 더 카필라노 트레이딩 포스트(The Capilano Trading Post)은 기념품 샵이라고 생각하면 된다.

 밴쿠버(Vancouver)는 브리티시 콜럼비아(British Columbia)의 한 도시이다. 브리티시 콜럼비아 출신이라면 할인이 된다. 나는 외국인이기 때문에 해당사항이 없다!

 카필라노 서스펜션 브릿지(The Capilano Suspension Bridge)에서 대학생 가격은 $36.70 이다. 한화로 33,000원. 공원 입장료가 33,000원이면 저렴한 가격은 아니다...ㅋㅋㅋ 이렇게 결제를 하면 그라우스 산(Grouse Mountain) 입장료 $1.00 할인권도 준다!
