Day 28: Vancouver Downtown(밴쿠버 다운타운) 둘러보기!

가스타운 증기 시계(The Gastown Steam Clock) @12p.m. 일부러 맞춰서 갔는데 조금 늦었다. 그리고 웬걸 사람들이 많이 없었다. 유명한 관광지라고 해서 사람들이 많이 모일 줄 알았는데 말이다.

증기 시계니까 정각이 되면 증기로 위로 뿜어져 나온다. 그냥 그런가 보다 하고 패스!

누군지 전혀 모르겠다. 다시 읽으면 기억이 날텐데 작은 글씨여서 보이지도 않는다.. 올림픽에 관련돼서 대단한 캐나다 사람이라는 것만 기억난다. 그렇다. 대단한 사람이다.

아마도 밴쿠버에서 가장 유명한 지하철 역? 왜냐하면 공항에서 바로 이어지는 열차가 오고 간다.
뉴욕(New York)과 서울(Seoul)에는 시에서 운영하는 공공 자전거(Public Bike) 시스템이 있는데 밴쿠버(Vancouver)는 비교적 작은 도시여서 없나 보다. 일일이 자전거를 빌려야 하다니 불편하다.
New York and Seoul have a city-run Public Bike system, but Vancouver is a relatively small city, so it must not be. It's inconvenient to have to rent a bicycle every day.
돌아가는 길에 다시 증기시계를 봤다. 오후 한 시였다. 오후 12시에 비해 사람들이 더 있었다. 그런데 어떤 눈치 없는 저 중국인 때문에 사람들이 엄청 짜증냈다. 증기 시계에서 증기가 끝날 때 까지 다른 사람들은 사진도 못 찍고 저기서 계속 저러고 있었다. 중국인에게는 무슨 일이 있었을까?
I saw the steam clock again on the way back. It was one o'clock in the afternoon. There were more people than at 12 p.m. But people were really annoyed by the Chinese standing before the clock. Until the steam clock was over, other people couldn't take a picture because the Chinese person kept doing that there as if the clock is her's. What happened to the Chinese?
그 중국인이 가고 나서는 다른 중국인이 새치기를 해버렸다. 중국인은 왜 저럴까?
After the Chinese person had gone, another Chinese cut the line and took a picture. What's wrong with the Chinese?
위 사진 속에서 그 중국인들을 아직도 볼 수 있다. 사진만 거의 10분 째.. 다른 사람들이 영어로 나오라고 해도 이해를 못하니 의사소통이 될리가 없다. 결국에는 서양 사람들이 몸짓하면서 나오라고 해서 저렇게 셀카를 찍고 있다. 중국인 관광객들에게는 교육이 필요하다.
You can still see the Chinese in the picture above. She's been taking pictures for almost 10 minutes even if other people ask her to go out in English. People can't communicate because she didn't understand. Chinese tourists need education.

캐나다 대학교는 어떨까 하고 방문했다. 입학하려면 어떻게 해야 하냐고 물어보고 학생들은 대부분 어디서 오는지 물어봤더니 입학은 인터넷에서 알아서 찾아보라고 했고, 대부분 캐나다 현지 사람이 아니고 외국인이 다닌다고 했다. 학비는 한 학기에 천 만원 가까이.... 부자만 다닐 수 있을 듯 하다. 커뮤니티 칼리지(Community College)는 한국의 전문대학교랑 비슷하다고 생각하면 된다.
외국인 학생들이 영어 점수가 부족해고 SAT 점수가 없어도 입학할 수 있으니까 커뮤니티 칼리지(community college)를 선호한다고 들었다. 그리고 워킹 홀리데이(Working Holiday)하면서도 수업을 듣고 학위 취득이 가능해서 외국인 학생들이 많이 선호한다. 학위의 매력은 없다.
I heard that foreign students prefer community college because even if they lack English scores they can still enter without SAT scores. And foreign students prefer it because they can take classes and get a degree while doing working holiday. But there's no benefit of a degree.
그래서 그냥 핸드폰 충전하고, 화장실 가고, 학교 학생들에게 이것 저것 물어봤다. 대부분 학생들이 커뮤니티 칼리지(community college)에서 졸업해서 직업을 구하고 영주권 취득을 하고 싶어 한다고 했다.
So I just charged my cell phone, went to the bathroom, and asked school students this and that. Most of the students said they wanted to graduate from a community college to get a job and get permanent residency.

예일타운(Yaletown)은 살짝 다운타운의 외곽이라고 할 수 있는데 술집, 레스토랑들이 많다.

Bernard Cobin was working at The Warehouse selling mattresses at 996 Homer Street. When the owner died, Bernard did two things: changed his name to Harry Hammer and married the boss' widow.
Harry Hammer was legendary in the 70's and 80's for his actions on TV and radio - he'd do just about anything, including screaming on air and waving his arms around madly, to sell mattresses. His warehouse was the place to go if you wanted cheap, cheap, prices. And his catch phrase - "noyne noyne six Homer" said with a Brooklyn accent - made sure that you'd never forget the location. So here's to Harry Hammer, a Yaletown original.

밴쿠버 도서관. 도서관이 이렇게 도심 속에 있는 것은 서울시도서관(Seoul Public Library)랑 비슷하다. 밴쿠버 도서관은 어떨까 하고 들어갔는데 확실히 쾌적한 것이 공부하기 좋은 환경이었다. 꼭 방문할 것을 추천한다.

26 May 1995. 캐나다는 날짜를 적을 때 '일(day)' 부터 적는지 '달(month)'부터 적는지 알 수 없다. 가는 곳 마다 사람마다 모두 달랐다.
