Day 5: Washington Square Park, NYU, Brooklyn

워싱턴 스퀘어 파크, 뉴욕대학교 NYU, 브루클린 킨포크 펍

 워싱턴 스퀘어 파크에 있는 동상인데 누군지 모르겠다. 미국 역사를 공부하고 여행을 오면 더 좋을 것 같은데 미국 역사에 위인들이 얼마나 많은지 공부하고 여행 오면 엄청 오랜 시간이 걸릴 것 같다.

 It's a statue in Washington Square Park, but I don't know who it is. Studying American history and traveling would be better. 

 여기서 이상한 사람들을 많이 만났다. 앉아 있었는데 갑자기 말을 걸더니 마약을 사라고 그러고 어떤 사람은 $10만 빌려달라고 그러고 그냥 무시하는 방법이 최고다. 내 옆에 앉아 있던 커플은 사기꾼이 말을 걸어도 들은 채도 안하고 계속해서 둘이서만 대화했다.

 I met a lot of strange people here. Someone asked me to buy drugs. And another one asked me to lend him ten dollars. The couple sitting next to me kept talking to each other without listening to the beggar.

 어린 학생들이 와서 단체 사진을 찍고 그러던데 뭐하는 것인지는 모르겠다. 나도 그냥 앉아서 간식 먹고 숨을 돌리고 있었다.

 I was just sitting there, eating snacks, and taking my breath away.

 Squirrel? Blue wool? 도시 안에 귀여운 동물. 서울 도시 한 가운데에서는 이런 동물 한 번도 본 적 없는데 서울보다 더 큰 도시에서 이런 야생 동물을 보게 될 줄이야.

 A cute animal in the city. I've never seen an animal like this in the middle of Seoul, but I can't believe I'll ever see one in a bigger city than Seoul.

 워싱턴 스퀘어 파크 Washington Square Park에서 조금 걸어나오니 바로 보이는 NYU 깃발들. 역시 학기 중이 아니어서 건물 대부분 문이 닫혀 있었다.

 멋지게 생긴 학교 건물. 경영대학이라고 한다. 뉴욕대학은 공학 대학보다는 경여 대학이 유명하다고 한다.

딱히 볼 것은 없어서 (대학교는 여행할 때 좋은 관광지가 아니다. 그런데 나는 이번 미국 여행 중 대학교를 두 곳 이상 방문했다), 브쿠클린으로 이동했다.

 I moved to Brooklyn because there was nothing to see inside New York University.

 술을 좋아하지는 않는데 브루클린 젊은이들이 브루클린에서 그렇게 잘 논다고 하길래 한 번 구경하러 갔다가 맥주 한 병 마시게 되었다. 조금 이른 시간이라 그런가, 평일이라서 그런가 사람들이 없었다. 구글에 검색해보니 늦은 저녁 시간에 가야 사람들이 많이 온다고 했다. 저녁 일정이 있어서 맥주 한 병만 마시고 바로 다음 행선지로 향했다. 그런데 여기 pub 사장이 굉장히 젊고 친절해서 편안한 분위기에서 간식을 먹을 수 있었다. 

Watching NBA Game @Barclays Center

콜럼비아 대학교를 방문하고 오후에 무엇을 할까 고민하다가 어린 시절부터 꼭 직접 보고 싶었던 NBA 농구 경기를 관람하기로 했다. After visiting Columbia University and thinking about what to do in the afternoon, I decided to watch an NBA basketball game that I've always wanted to see for myself since I was a kid.

Subway Station: Atlantic Av-Barclays Center에서 내리면 된다. 그리고 사실 Game Time이면 Brooklyn Nets 팬들이 많이 보인다. 그냥 그들을 쫓아가면 된다. Game Day에는 지하철을 타면 Nets 굿즈를 입고 있는 팬들이 많이 보이는데 팬들만 쫓아다니면 길 잃을 위험은 없다. And in fact, I could see a lot of Brooklyn Nets fans at Game Time. You just have to go after them. On Game Day, you can see a lot of fans wearing Nets goods when you take the subway, and there's no danger of getting lost if you just follow them around.

1월 뉴욕은 그냥 춥다. New York in January is just cold. 미국의 농구 인기를 지하철에서부터 실감할 수 있어서 정말 신선했다. 한국에서는 국내리그가 인기가 없어서 goods나 티켓이나 잘 안 팔리는데 미국은 자신의 고향을 항상 자랑스럽게 생각하니까 보고 배워야겠다는 생각을 했다.

It was refreshing to realize the popularity of basketball in America from the subway. In Korea, the domestic league is not popular enough to sell goods or tickets, but the U.S. people always feel proud of its hometown.

 바깥은 정말 얼어 죽을 것 같았는데 경기장 안으로 들어오는 순간 정말 온몸이 뜨거웠다. I felt like I was going to freeze to death outside, but the moment I walked into the stadium, my whole body was really hot. 한국 농구리그, 축구리그도 많이 활성화되었으면 좋겠다. I hope the Korean Basketball League and the Soccer League will also be popular one day.

미국에서는 누구나 총기를 소지할 수 있기 때문에 농구 경기장이나 실내 공공장소에서는 소지품 검사를 철저히 실시한다. 음식, 물, 일반 페트병도 가지고 입장할 수 없다. 나는 농구 경기를 보면서 피자빵을 먹을 생각으로 일부러 음식을 샀는데 바로 빼았겼다. (경기장 안에서 물 500ml는 $6에 판매되고 있었다)

In the U.S., anyone can carry a gun, so they thoroughly check their belongings at basketball stadiums and indoor public places. Food, water and regular pet bottles are not allowed in.

어떤 가수가 미국 국가를 불렀는데 어떤 가수인지는 모르겠다. 미국 농구 경기를 보니까 꼭 유명한 사람 한 사람은 매 경기마다 오는 것 같다. 농구 중계를 봐도 어떤 유명 인사가 방문했다고 매번 경기 시작 전에 소개를 해주는데 전혀 모르는 사람이다. 사람들도 정말 많이 왔고 경기가 재밌을 것 같았다ㅋㅋㅋ

경기는 브루클린 승! 홈 경기에서 홈 팀이 경기를 이기면 재밌는 쇼들을 많이 한다. Brooklyn Nets 팀은 뉴욕에 있어서 뉴욕 출신 뮤지션들의 노래를 DJ가 틀어준다. 농구 경기장 안에 DJ booth도 있고 한국이랑 많이 달랐다. 한국은 문화 후진국이라고 하는데 미국이랑 비교하면 맞는 말 같기도 하다. There is DJ Booth inside the basketball stadium and it was very different from Korea. It is said that Korea is a backward country in culture, but compared to the U.S., it seems to be true. The game is Brooklyn. When the home team wins the game at home, there are many fun shows. The Brooklyn Nets team is in New York, where a DJ plays songs by musicians from New York.

 갑자기 NBA 경기를 보러 가기로 결정한 것이어서 어디서 어떻게 티켓을 사야하는지 몰랐는데 공연, 스포츠 경기와 관련된 모든 티켓은 TicketMaster에서 구매할 수 있다. 만약 TicketMaster에서 품절이라고 해도 경기장 앞에서 암표를 파는 사람이 있다. 암표가 정가보다 저렴한 경우도 있다. 그런데 되도록이면 암표는 사지 말고 티켓마스터로 예매하기를 바란다. 그리고 저 QR코드가 티켓이다! 캡쳐해서 보여주면 된다.

 I suddenly decided to go to an NBA game, so I didn't know where and how to buy tickets, but all tickets related to performances and sporting events can be purchased at the TicketMaster. If it's out of stock at TicketMaster, there's someone who sells tickets in front of the stadium. In some cases, ticket prices are lower than the list price. But if possible, don't buy a ticket and book a ticket. And that QR code is a ticket! You can take a screenshot and show it.
