[The Young Creatives] RAPPER - pH-1

Our fifth #TYC2017 artist is PH-1. He is an upcoming rapper who combines upbeat melodies and hopeful lyrics in his songs. pH-1 recently signed to H1GHR Music and is lined up for greatness. Find out how he overcame challenges and how his faith keeps him going everyday.

우리의 다섯번째 TYC 2017 아티스트는 pH-1 입니다.  pH-1은 그의 노래에 희망적인 가사와 업비트 멜로디를 합하는 래퍼입니다. 최근에는 하이어뮤직과 계약을 맺었고, 최고로 가는 길에 있다. 그가 어떻게 도전을 이겨내고 그의 신념을 어떻게 매일 매일 지키는지 찾아보자.

Name: pH-1 (pronounced P. H. One.) 

Age: 1989

City: Seoul, South Korea/ New York, USA 

Q. What city are you from? 

A. I lived in Seoul when I was little, I moved to the States and lived in New York for 15 years. I am back in Seoul now. 

Q . 어떤 도시에서 왔나요?

A : 어렸을 땐 서울에서 살았고, 미국으로 이민가서 뉴욕에서 15년간 살고, 지금 다시 서울왔어요.

Q. Who or what inspires you to pursue music? 

A. I started learning piano when I was little. I was in a band and I love the guitar, drums, saxophone and other musical instruments. Music in general was my favourite before hip-hop. 

Q : 음악을 하도록 누가 혹은 어떤게 영감을 주었나?

A : 어렸을 때 피아노를 배웠었다. 밴드 활동을 했고, 기타, 드럼, 색소폰 등 악기 연주를 좋아했다. 음악 자체는 힙합 전에는 내가 제일 좋아했다.

Q. What is the biggest challenge you’ve had as being young in this industry? 

A. My biggest challenge was that I didn’t know anyone here in Korea, and started without any connections because I moved to the States and lived there for a long time. Also, cultural differences. 

Q : 음악 산업에 오는데 가장 큰 도전은 무엇이었나요?

A : 나의 가장 큰 도전은 한국에 와서 아무도 모른 채로, 어떤 연결도 없이 시작한 것이다. 내가 미국에서 오랫동안 살다가 와서 그렇고, 문화 차이도 있었다.

Q. What inspires you to create your own path? 

A. I am Christian so my love and belief in God is my motivation. 

Q : 무엇이 당신의 길로 가는데 영감을 주었나요?

A : 나는 기독교인 (크리스찬)이라서 하나님(God)에 대한 믿음과 사랑이 나의 동기부여이다.

Q. Can you share any inspiring words to young creatives like you? 

A. Go where you are aiming for and make your goals clear. It is totally okay to do music if you love it. But it's better to be clear on what you want to achieve with your music. 

Q : 당신과 같은 young creatives 에게 해주고 싶은 좋은 메시지 있나요?

A : 자신이 가고자 하는 길을 가고, 목표를 잘 설정하세요. 음악을 해도 좋아요, 좋아한다면요. 하지만 음악과 함께 이루고 싶은 것이 무엇인지 설정되어있다면 더 좋겠죠.

Q. How old were you when you knew this is what you wanted to do? 

A. I think I got serious about it when I was a freshman at university. 

Q : 언제부터 지금 하고 있는 일을 하고 싶었었나요?

A : 아마 대학교 1학년 때 진지하게 생각했었어요.

Q. How did you get to where you are today? 

A. I lived just as other people do in New York. I studied really hard to get a nice job, went to a good university and indeed got a nice job. After graduating from Boston College, I studied to get into dental school. Afterwards, I changed my career path and worked as a web developer. But, there was a moment where I felt like I couldn’t live without working in the music industry so I decided to come to Korea to try my best. I think I made the right decision! 

Q : 오늘 지금 있게 된 곳에 어떻게 오게 된거 같나요? ( 지금 이 자리에 어떻게 오게 되었나요?)

A : 뉴욕에서 남들 살 듯이 살았었고, 좋은 직업을 얻기 위해 공부 열심히 했고, 좋은 대학을 갔고, 진짜로 좋은 직업을 가졌어요. 그런데 Boston College ( 보스턴 칼리지)를 졸업하고, 치의학전문대학원에 (grad dental school) 입학하기 위해 또 다시 공부했어요. 이후에 저의 진로 방향을 틀었고, 웹 개발자(web developer)로 일했어요. 하지만 내가 음악 쪽에 없으면 살 수 없을 것 같다는 순간을 느꼈고, 최선을 다하려고 한국에 오기로 결심했어요. 저는 제가 선택을 잘 했다고 생각해요.

Q. How would you describe your style? 

A. I think I express what I see and what I learn from my life through my music. I find it important to have groove and to be melodical. I am not that interested in intense and tight raps anymore. 

Q : 당신의 스타일을 표현해주세요.

A : 저는 제가 본 것과 인생에서 배운 것들을 음악을 통해 표현하는 것 같아요. 그루브를 가지고, 멜로디컬 해지는게 중요하다는 것을 느꼈고, 저는 더 이상 타이트하고 빡센 intense 랩을 좋아하지 않아요.

Q. What sets you apart from others/ makes you unique? 

A. I try not to put any swearing, sexual stuff, drugs, and money in my lyrics. I think it is the easiest way to see how my music is distinguished from others. I just hope my lifestyle and my believes are evident through my music. 

Q : 당신을 더 유니크, 색 다르게 하는 , 남들과 다른 색깔은 무엇인가요?

A : 어떠한 욕도, 어떠한 마약 stuffs, 성적인 stuffs, 돈 stuffs 같은 것들을 제 음악 가사에 적으려고 하지 않아요. 제 생각에는 이런 것들이 제 음악이 다른 음악과 다른 점을 찾을 때 가장 쉬운 것 같고요. 저는 단지 저의 라이프스타일과 신념이 저의 음악을 통해 분명해지길 바라요.

Q. What’s the most memorable thing that’s happened to you in your career? 

A. Before moving to Korea, I visited for 10 days to perform at my friend Owen Ovadoz's concert. Whilst I was in Korea for 10 days, I met many artists and big agencies. I think that was the biggest confirmation for me. I felt like I could work here. It can work. A year later, I signed to an amazing label after moving to Korea (T/N: H1GHR Music Records). I think that was the most grateful thing that has ever happened to me!

Q : 음악 인생/경력/커리어 중에 가장 기억에 남는 사건이 있나요?

A : 한국에 오기 전에, 친구 Owen Ovadoz(김오왼, 김우현, 오왼 오바도즈)의 콘서트에 10일 정도 동안 방문한 적이 있어요. 한국에 10일 동안 있을 때, 많은 아티스트들이랑 큰 에이전시를 만났어요. 제 생각에는 그게 저에게는 가장 큰 확신이었던 것 같아요. 그때 여기서 음악해도 되겠다 라고 느꼈어요. 일년 후에, 한국에 오고 나서 엄청난 레이블 하이어 뮤직과 계약을 했어요. 아마 그게 저에게는 가장 감사한 일이었던 것 같아요.
